Don't get burned by misinformation!
From TikTok hacks to old-school tanning lore, there’s tons of confusion about how SPF actually works – and when or if it is needed. The truth? Many of us aren’t using sunscreen properly, and some of what we think we know could be putting our skin – and health – at risk. In this post, we’re setting the record straight on the biggest sunscreen myths—because sun safety shouldn’t be a guessing game. Whether you're SPF smart or SPF-shy, you'll leave this post with safer sun habits...
Darker skin doesn’t need sunscreen
Yes, melanin offers some natural protection, but it’s nowhere near enough to prevent sun damage, hyperpigmentation, or skin cancer. Everyone, regardless of skin tone, should wear SPF daily.
You only need SPF when it’s sunny
UV rays penetrate clouds and windows. Up to 80% of UV radiation can reach your skin even on overcast days. Daily protection is key.
Makeup with SPF is enough
Most people don’t apply nearly enough makeup to get the SPF protection on the label. Keep safe by using dedicated sunscreen.
Water-resistant SPF doesn’t need reapplication
Water-resistant is not the same as waterproof. You still need to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
SPF blocks vitamin D
Studies show typical use doesn’t significantly impact vitamin D levels but if you are concerned, you could top up your levels of vitamin D from food or supplement.
Higher SPF means all-day protection
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, SPF 50 blocks - 98%, and SPF 100 blocks - 99%5. The difference is slight and no matter the factor, no SPF lasts all day - reapplication is essential.
Tanning is safe if you don’t burn
There’s no such thing as a “healthy” tan. A tan is a warning sign that UV damage has already occurred. Go for a fake tan if you want a golden, guilt-free glow.
Sunscreen causes breakouts
Most modern formulas are non-comedogenic, and there are many options for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Look for mineral-based or gel sunscreens with soothing ingredients like zinc oxide or niacinamide.
